A Russian Aeroflot–Sukhoi Superjet 100, caught fire mid-air and exploded into flames Sunday while trying to do an emergency landing at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport killing at least 41 passengers onboard.

Elena Markovskaya, a member of investigative committee confirmed the tragic incident and put the death toll at 41 which includes 2 children and a US citizen. An electric fire may have been resposible for yesterday’s burning of the plane.

Meanwhile a gory footage of a video showing the burning of the aircraft from the inside is spreading virally on most social media sites. There are also reports that some passengers added to the delay of evacuating the Aeroflot by trying to reach for their hand luggage from the overhead compartments as against the emergency evacuating procedures.

According to an airport official “many passengers delayed emergency evacuation – because against all instructions – they were picking up hand luggage from overhead compartments.”

This action of some passengers aboard a plane that caught fire mid-air and later exploded has been slammed by most people and is one of the reasons for the increase in the death toll. Passengers used the exit ways inside the aircraft to evacuate from the plane.

Television footage of the incident shows the rear end of the Russian Aeroflot getting engulfed in flames while making an emergency landing at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport on Sunday.
