Italy Airport Strike Leads to Hundreds of Flight Cancellations

A 24 hour coordinated strike by airport staff in Italy has resulted in hundreds of flight cancellations Tuesday across many airports in the country, Rome and Milan are the worst affected airports in terms of flight cancellations reports the Independent and the Sun.

It has been learnt that the 24 hour strike involving the airport and the airport staff which is scheduled for today triggered due to disputes over pay and working conditions.

This industrial action is going to disrupt hundreds of Britons who will be travelling to and from this European country.

Italy’s National carrier Alitalia has cancelled half its flights for May21st Tuesday due to the ongoing 24 hour walkout by the workers, the Italian carrier has grounded close to 300 flight operations between today and tomorrow. However Alitalia is operating flights partially Tuesday in spite of the coordinated strike, the airline will run its flights as scheduled during the peak times 7 to 10 am and 6 to 9 pm according to Alitalia. A news release by the airline states “Alitalia has taken Special measures to mitigate customer inconvenience by operating bigger aircraft on domestic and international routes.”

Today’s strike across the airports in Italy also has an impact on US travelers too, Alitalia has cancelled two of its flights between Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), overall 10 US flights operating between Italy and the United states have been cancelled between Tuesday and Wednesday.
